Wigan Residents Being Asked To Follow Bonfire Tips

Wigan Council has asked residents to follow these tips if they plan on having a bonfire in the coming weeks.

There are no restrictions preventing bonfires upon a private residential property as long as they do not cause a nuisance to other people and the smoke does not affect the public highway.

If a bonfire begins to cause a nuisance this could result in a statutory nuisance investigation in line with the Environmental Protection Act 1990.

A Wigan Council spokesman said:

“Having a bonfire might seem like a good plan– but do you know the impacts of having one?

“Not only can the smoke and smell cause a nuisance to those nearby– it also contributes to local air pollution.
